One day, he shoots down a rare dragon with one of his inventions. But when Hiccup finds the trapped dragon, he doesn't kill it; he sets it free instead. He's then thrown into dragon hunting class with his pals to beef up his skills. In the woods, Hiccup stumbles upon the very dragon he freed, still hanging around.
The dragon, a Night Fury, can't fly because half of its tail fin got ripped from Hiccup's shot. Feeling guilty, Hiccup feeds it and they start to bond. He names the dragon Toothless and crafts a prosthetic fin so it can soar again, but under his control.
Stoick returns from his hunt empty-handed, but his disappointment turns to pride when he learns Hiccup's aced his class, which means he's got to kill a dragon for his final test. Just as Hiccup plans to run away with Toothless, Astrid catches them. To prove Toothless is friendly, they take her for a spin in the sky.
Toothless whisks them away to the dragon's nest, home to a giant dragon called The Red Death. Astrid wants to spill the beans to their tribe, but Hiccup refuses to protect Toothless. The final test arrives, and Hiccup's supposed to slay a Monstrous Nightmare dragon. Instead of killing, he tries to tame it.
When Stoick provokes the dragon to fight, Toothless swoops in to shield Hiccup, which gets him captured. Hiccup accidentally blurts out that Toothless knows the dragon nest's location, and he's forced to guide Stoick and his crew on a hunt. Despair hits Hiccup, but Astrid's pep talk fires them up to chase after Toothless.
