Her defeat becomes fodder for conversation and mockery among her peers. Lara jokes that someday she'll be the one leaving her opponent battered in the boxing ring.

Considered a promising talent by her coach, Lara often falls behind on payments. Her coach, also the owner of the boxing gym, warns her about it. Unfazed, Lara leaves and takes up delivery work, riding her bike. Physically adept in both fighting and biking, Lara uses these skills to survive on the streets.
However, she still needs money. She participates in a street bet, racing against dozens of cyclists while carrying a fox tail. If she escapes, she wins. She proves to be agile, understanding the streets and finding ways to evade other cyclists. Unfortunately, an accident lands her in the police station.
Anna Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives to ensure Lara's freedom, revealing to the audience another side of Lara's life. Lara is the only daughter of a businessman, Richard Croft (Dominic West), who is also interested in mystical matters. His disappearance during her teenage years drove her away, leading her to live on the streets. Subconsciously, she refuses to accept that her missing father is gone.
An event eventually leads Lara to fly to Hong Kong. There, she meets Lu Ren (Daniel Wu), a ship owner and drunkard, the son of a fisherman who once took Lara's father to a deadly island called Yamatai. Richard Croft believed the island held something invaluable and needed protection from falling into the wrong hands.
The early minutes of this new version of Tomb Raider seem promising. The story brings Lara Croft back to her youth, before she embarked on adventures involving ancient artifacts or, as the title suggests, tomb raiding.
Director Roar Uthaug draws on Lara's childhood memories of her closeness with her father. So when her father fails to return as promised, Lara is convinced he's not truly dead.
However, expectations for this new storyline seem to falter as we follow Lara's journey to find her father. After surviving a massive storm that wrecks Lu Ren's ship, Lara and the captain endure. By the next day, Lu Ren has become one of the captives of Mathias Vogel (Walton Goggins), who claims to have killed Richard.
