The story of "The Banshees of Inisherin" revolves around two friends who end up in a conflict because one of them no longer wants to be friends.
Once upon a time in 1923, Pádraic Súilleabháin (played by Colin Farrell) and Colm Doherty (played by Brendan Gleeson) were two longtime buddies.
These two guys lived on an island called Inisherin off the coast of Ireland and loved chatting with each other, even though their interests were quite different.
Pádraic was a farmer who loved animals and had a favorite pet donkey named Jenny. On the other hand, Colm was a folk musician who lived alone with his dog.
They always met and talked at a pub in their boring and quiet island village. Meanwhile, on the mainland, the Irish Civil War (1923) was raging.
But one morning, Pádraic was shocked when Colm suddenly didn't want to talk to him anymore. Not only that, Colm didn’t even want to see him again.
Confused, Pádraic kept trying to talk to Colm, thinking he must have done something wrong. But Colm simply said he didn’t want to be friends with Pádraic anymore.
Their broken friendship became the talk of the village. Even Pádraic’s sister, Siobhán (played by Kerry Condon), tried to help them reconcile.
Amid Pádraic's confusion, a quirky and awkward young man from the village named Dominic (played by Barry Keoghan) tried to become Pádraic’s new friend.
Dominic wanted to be Pádraic's new buddy and also wanted to escape from his abusive policeman father.
But Pádraic still wanted Colm back. He became more and more distressed and kept trying to win Colm back in various ways.
Meanwhile, Colm said he just didn’t want to be friends with Pádraic anymore and wanted to focus on creating music to leave a legacy.
This answer didn’t satisfy Pádraic. Known as a kind but somewhat clueless guy, Pádraic kept trying to get Colm to talk to him again, even if it wasn’t like before.
Fed up with Pádraic’s efforts, Colm swore he would cut off one of his own fingers every time Pádraic tried to talk to him again.
At first, the threat wasn’t taken seriously. But one day, after Pádraic talked to Colm, he found a finger on his doorstep the next morning.
Now, Pádraic was caught in a dilemma: should he let go of his friendship or continue to try, risking Colm losing his fingers and his ability to make the music he loves.
