The story is set approximately 16 years after Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) defeated Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the Colosseum during the events of Gladiator (2000).
Before his death, Maximus had issued political reform orders, reinstating Gracchus (Derek Jacobi) as a senator. However, these reforms in the Roman government did not proceed smoothly. The once-prosperous empire fell back into tyranny when Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) and his younger brother, Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), seized power.
Geta and Caracalla ruled Rome with chaotic policies. They ignored the people’s welfare, indulged in frivolity, and sought to dominate the world through war and conquest.
Their ambitions were enabled by Rome’s formidable army, led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal)—a former loyal soldier under Maximus. Though Marcus remained loyal to the Roman Empire, he secretly wished to avoid further bloodshed from leading troops into battle.
The narrative then shifts to Numidia, where Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal) has lived in exile since fleeing Rome as a child after his life as a throne heir was threatened. Now grown, he goes by the name Hanno and is married to a woman named Arishat (Yuval Gonen).
One day, Roman soldiers arrive in Numidia to seize the region, sparking resistance from the locals, including Hanno and Arishat. The ensuing war claims Arishat’s life, leaving Hanno grief-stricken and vengeful.
Captured and taken to Rome as a slave, Hanno is forced into combat in a small arena. His fighting style catches the eye of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), who buys him to train as a new gladiator. But Macrinus has a grander scheme—using Hanno as a pawn. Hanno agrees under one condition: he demands a showdown with General Marcus in the Colosseum to avenge his wife’s death.

Gladiator II is once again directed by Ridley Scott, the legendary filmmaker behind the original. The script, penned by David Scarpa, expands on characters created by David Franzoni. Paul Mescal stars as the lead, joined by Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger. Returning cast members include Connie Nielsen as Lucilla and Derek Jacobi as Gracchus.
