Three years have passed since Moana bravely sailed beyond the reef, restoring the heart of the nature goddess Te Fiti and bringing balance back to the ocean. Since then, she has become a well-respected voyager among her people, frequently journeying to distant islands in search of other communities and to strengthen the bonds between them.
Her adventurous spirit and leadership have earned her the honorary title of Tautai—a title traditionally given to those who were instrumental in connecting the scattered islands of Oceania.
One day, Moana is visited in a vision by one of her revered ancestors, Tautai Vasa. Known as a legendary pathfinder, Tautai Vasa speaks to Moana with a message of great importance. She instructs Moana to seek out Motufetu, a mysterious island shrouded in legend.
According to ancient lore, Motufetu was once a crucial place for the people of Oceania, but it was cursed and submerged beneath the sea by a powerful and vengeful god named Nalo.
Although she is well aware of the danger such a journey could bring, Moana feels compelled to accept the task. However, unlike her past voyages, this time she is burdened by fear and hesitation—an unfamiliar feeling for the once fearless wayfinder. The reason for her anxiety is personal: Moana now has a younger sister named Simea, whom she loves dearly.
Simea, in turn, is fiercely protective of Moana and struggles with the idea of her sister setting out on yet another dangerous expedition. Her concern is born out of deep love and fear of loss, much like the love Moana holds for her. Their bond adds emotional complexity to Moana’s decision, making the journey feel even more significant.

Encouraged by her mother and driven by a strong sense of duty to her people and her ancestors, Moana assembles a diverse crew of sailors to accompany her. United by a shared goal but differing in personality and skills, the crew embarks on the voyage to locate Motufetu. Guided by Tautai Vasa’s cryptic instruction to “follow the fire in the sky,” Moana sets her sights on the unknown.
The journey proves to be far from easy. The crew faces numerous challenges, including clashes of opinion, unpredictable weather, and treacherous seas. Despite the hardships, their shared experiences gradually forge trust and camaraderie.
Just as their teamwork begins to solidify, they are ambushed by the Kakamora—a mischievous and hostile band of pirates with coconut-shaped bodies who threaten to derail their mission.
In a surprising twist of fate, the group encounters the demigod Maui, who had mysteriously gone missing. They discover that he is being held captive by the sea goddess Matangi, and freeing him becomes an unexpected side mission. With Maui once again by Moana’s side, the strength of their alliance is rekindled.
As they draw closer to Motufetu, signs of the island’s cursed nature begin to surface. Dark omens and unnatural phenomena grow more frequent, signaling that the god Nalo is watching—and ready to strike. The final leg of the journey becomes a true test of bravery, unity, and resolve as Moana, Maui, and the crew confront the full wrath of an ancient force determined to protect the secrets of Motufetu.
Their mission is no longer just about discovery—it becomes a fight for the future of Oceania itself.
