The story opens in the aftermath of The Lion King (2019). Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé) are blessed with a daughter, a lion cub named Kiara (voiced by Blue Ivy Carter).
One day, Simba and Nala must leave Kiara temporarily to take part in a birthing ritual in the forest. Kiara is left under the care of Rafiki (John Kani), Pumbaa (Seth Rogen), and Timon (Billy Eichner).
Feeling scared after her parents' departure, Kiara is comforted by Simba’s loyal friends. Rafiki then takes the initiative to tell her a legendary story about her grandfather, Mufasa (Aaron Pierre), the revered king of the Pride Lands.
The tale then flashes back to decades earlier, when a young Mufasa was the beloved cub of his parents. He was especially close to his father, Masego (voiced by Keith David), and his mother, Afia (voiced by Anika Noni Rose).
The family had plans to travel to Milele, a land rumored to be the finest habitat for animals on Earth.
However, before they could begin their journey, Mufasa was tragically separated from his parents after being swept away by a powerful river current. He drifted so far that he lost all sense of where his mother and father were.
While floating atop a log, young Mufasa encountered a deadly threat as crocodiles began to pursue him. Fortunately, another lion cub named Taka (voiced by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) discovered him just in time.
The two quickly formed a close bond, with Taka even wishing to make Mufasa his brother.
Though this desire was initially rejected by Obasi (Lennie James), Taka’s father and the leader of a lion pride, he eventually gave his blessing after much debate.

The story continues to explore the ups and downs of Mufasa and Taka’s relationship. Mufasa grows into a brilliant and courageous lion, while Taka—destined to be king—finds himself overshadowed, slowly consumed by jealousy.
A significant event compels Mufasa and Taka to embark on a journey together to Milele. This trip marks the beginning of their complex relationship and introduces Mufasa to Rafiki, Sarabi, and Zazu.
This journey ultimately sets Mufasa on the path to becoming a true leader—the future King of the Pride Lands, respected by all the animals.
