The story begins with an epic battle that will determine the fate of Earth. If the warriors from Outworld win their tenth consecutive victory, Shang Tsung will earn the right to conquer Earth. The central character, Cole Young, is introduced as a washed-up MMA fighter who competes for money. Unfortunately, he loses his latest match.
Cole bears a dragon-shaped birthmark, which draws the attention of Jax, a former special forces operative. Realizing that those with this dragon mark are being hunted by warriors from Outworld, Jax starts tailing Cole to protect him from certain death before the tournament even begins.
As expected, Shang Tsung sends Sub-Zero — portrayed by Joe Taslim, a deadly assassin with the power to control ice — to eliminate Cole. While Cole is at a cafe with his wife and daughter, the temperature suddenly drops, frost forms on the windows, and Sub-Zero launches a chilling attack. Luckily, Jax arrives just in time to rescue Cole and his family, driving them away in his car.
However, during their escape, Sub-Zero intercepts them. To protect Cole, Jax chooses to confront Sub-Zero alone and urges Cole to seek out Sonya Blade at a designated safe house. Cole, wanting to ensure his family's safety, hides his wife and daughter in a small inn before heading off to meet Sonya.
Meanwhile, Jax suffers a brutal defeat at the hands of Sub-Zero, who shatters both his arms.

Upon arriving at Sonya's hideout, Cole discovers that she too is part of the special forces and has been investigating the Mortal Kombat tournament. They are joined by Kano, a ruthless mercenary who also bears the dragon mark. Soon after, Shang Tsung detects Cole’s presence and dispatches a reptilian monster to kill him. A fierce battle ensues. Though Sonya had restrained Kano due to his aggressive behavior, he eventually breaks free and kills the creature by ripping out its heart — an act that fills him with arrogance and disdain for Sonya.
Recognizing the growing threat, Sonya leads Cole and Kano to the Temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God who offers sanctuary and training to those marked by the dragon symbol. Along the way, they meet Liu Kang, who had been awaiting their arrival, knowing all bearers of the mark would eventually come.
At the temple, Liu Kang introduces them to Raiden — the immortal God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm. They also find Jax recovering there, now equipped with mechanical arms.
Cole and Kano begin rigorous training under Liu Kang and Kung Lao, another warrior and loyal guardian of Raiden’s temple. Their goal is to unlock their arcana — a hidden superpower that lies dormant within each chosen fighter. Sonya, lacking the dragon mark, is not permitted to train.
Despite their efforts, neither Cole nor Kano can access their arcana. Raiden pushes them to train harder, warning that Outworld’s warriors may attack at any moment — and they do. Shang Tsung leads a surprise assault on the temple, but Raiden intervenes just in time, creating a lightning barrier to stop them.
Realizing they must awaken Kano’s power, Liu Kang and Kung Lao provoke him, insulting his strength and character. Infuriated, Kano finally unlocks his arcana — the ability to shoot a laser from his eye. Cole, however, still fails to awaken his power.
Everything changes when Cole's family is attacked by a hulking, four-armed Outworld warrior. Faced with the threat to his loved ones, Cole unlocks his arcana: a living armor that enhances his fighting ability — a gift inherited from his ancestor Hanzo Hasashi, known as Scorpion, who was previously killed by Sub-Zero.
Meanwhile, Shang Tsung manipulates the self-serving Kano into betraying Earthrealm. Kano disables the protective barrier, allowing Outworld’s forces to invade. In the ensuing battle, Kung Lao is killed by Shang Tsung, who absorbs his soul.
Raiden quickly teleports the remaining Earthrealm fighters — Cole, Liu Kang, Jax, and Sonya — to the void, a realm between worlds. He then assigns each warrior an Outworld opponent to fight in isolated battles. Using his teleportation powers, he sends them into battle, where the signature Mortal Kombat combat style is fully displayed, including the iconic fatalities.
One by one, the Earthrealm fighters defeat their enemies. In the climactic battle, Cole confronts Sub-Zero, who has kidnapped his wife and daughter. On the brink of defeat, Cole is saved by his ancestor, Hanzo Hasashi, who rises from the Netherrealm as Scorpion to exact revenge on Sub-Zero.
Together, they defeat Sub-Zero. However, Shang Tsung appears, retrieving Sub-Zero’s body and vowing to return with a larger army to annihilate Earthrealm’s defenders.
